Bike to Coast is a unique 130 km cycling and walking route along the entire Adriatic coast of Abruzzo, from Martinsicuro to San Salvo. It is an accessible and evocative route, nestled between the Adriatic Sea and nature. It is almost entirely flat, far from car traffic, ideal for families and cyclists of all levels. It alternates stretches of dense Mediterranean vegetation and pine forests with sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs, also offering views of the famous "Costa dei Trabocchi." The route crosses 19 coastal municipalities and protected nature reserves, and is full of shaded rest areas.

A nature reserve located along the Adriatic coast of the Abruzzo region, between the municipalities of Silvi and Pineto, in the province of Teramo. The area includes the "Torre del Cerrano," built in the 16th century by the Kingdom of Naples on the ruins of an ancient port of the Roman city of Hatria. The reserve is a unique environment where sea, dunes, and pine forests meet, creating a habitat rich in biodiversity. The protected area extends for approximately 7 kilometers along the coast and up to three nautical miles from shore, protecting both marine and coastal ecosystems. Visitors can spend a special day at the Borsacchio Reserve, the green oasis of Roseto degli Abruzzi, also by taking part in excursions organized by the "Borsacchio Guides." The Borsacchio Nature Reserve is one of the most evocative places on the Abruzzo coast. Established in 2005 to protect the natural heritage from urbanization, the entire area is a precious treasure trove of biodiversity. It extends over 1,100 hectares between Roseto degli Abruzzi and the hamlets of Cologna Spiaggia and Montepagano; it is characterized by a hilly and coastal landscape that remains environmentally intact. From the hills to the beach, through the Mazzarosa pine forest and the Borsacchio stream, passing through gorges and dunes, you can experience the magic of unspoiled nature that deserves to be explored. The Borsacchio Nature Reserve is home to approximately 120 rare plant species, as well as endangered birds, such as “Fratino”.

Travelling through the Valle delle Abbazie, you can immerse yourself in the medieval artistic and architectural heritage, in the ancient folk traditions of Abruzzo, in the culture of transhumance and in the local food and wine tradition, all the way to the wonders of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.

Valle delle Abbazie is a vast territory in the Vomano and Mavone valleys, two important Abruzzo rivers that embrace a land rich in natural and artistic beauty. The numerous abbey buildings scattered along the valleys hold great historical and cultural importance for the entire Region and represent distinctive points of interest. The Gran Sasso and Laga Mountains National Park offers a unique mix of rich wildlife, cultural heritage, and traditional cuisine. It is the highest peak of the Apennines, with the steep Paretone wall and the vast plateau of Campo Imperatore. The mountain also holds the Calderone, the southernmost glacier in Europe. Further north, the softer Laga Mountains are covered with forests of beech, fir, oak, and chestnut, crossed by streams and waterfalls. There are numerous hiking trails, medieval villages, castles, hermitages, and abbeys.

Visitors can enjoy a unique experience by participating in organized and guided workshops where they can learn the techniques for preparing traditional recipes, such as "Maccheroni alla chitarra con pallottine." Making handmade pasta is one of the oldest family traditions in the province of Teramo and the Abruzzo region. The secrets of the recipes for "Maccheroni alla chitarra con pallottine," "Timballo," "Crispelle," and "Virtù" have been passed down for generations. These traditional recipes reflect the quality of the local ingredients and the culture of the local community.

The territory of Castelli offers a great many opportunities for entertainment and leisure, as well as the chance to breathe in the atmosphere of a village with a rich historical and artistic tradition (the Ceramics Museum, the Cona di San Donato, the historic ceramic workshops). Castelli is renowned for its glorious majolica tradition, which has made this small village famous throughout the world. It is no coincidence that Castelli majolica from every era is preserved in all the world’s leading museums: from the British Museum to the Louvre, the Metropolitan and the Hermitage, among others. The Castelli Ceramics Museum holds one of the largest collections of majolica from every period. Also not to be missed is the rural Church of San Donato, known as the “Sistine Chapel of majolica”.

At the Sanctuary Basilica, visitors can see: the Museum of ex-votos and of the saint’s iconography, with places and mementos of the saint; the San Gabriele Historical Museum; the Stauròs Museum of contemporary sacred art; the permanent exhibition on the Shroud; the artistic nativity scene; and the artistic representation of the Passion.

According to a Vatican ranking, with an annual flow of around two million pilgrims, the Sanctuary of San Gabriele dell’Addolorata is among the fifteen most visited in the world.
